Fall = Apples

But not the kind you think. Refurbished Apples are on sale.  Given that my 'refurbished' i-pod lasted about 8 months, I'd recommend going with a monitor and buying the processing unit for full whack.

If accessories are your thing, just broom these deals.  Seriously...if you're gonna shell out $2500 for a MacBook Pro, is saving $300 worth it if the thing lasts half as long???

The Cult of Janie & Jack

I really want to know at what point in history did it become acceptable to spend more on children's clothing (knowing the little, uh, treasures sprout up a couple of inches per year) than on the adult clothing?  And when did the stuff get soo cute?  In my day, cute miniature couture was reserved for Barbie and her friends, courtesy of Bob Mackie and the like.

Now there's Janie & Jack with lines like English Countryside (on sale and up to size 8 now) and Strawberry Fields (also on sale)Jj_english_set.  Of course the sale prices are still more than most folks are willing to pay full retail for ($37 for a cardigan, reg. $48) but just wait another month or so and it will come down more.

Slurp

Been thinking about a large, sloppy glass of a rich red all afternoon.

So I found a jammy little number called Sin Zin(fandel) on My Wines Direct, which I've never heard of, but heck, they have hootch and they deliver -- where do I sign?  Use MWDFF at checkout for 20% off the whole order, stock up the cellar, er, fridge.

From the Sublime to the Ridiculous

When your 8 year old knows the relative price points between Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Coach, I'd suggest you click over to the summer clearance sale at Yoox.com.  Heck, look for yourself too since the likelihood is the little one probably will grow through whatever size you buy up for her long before she can wear the still-pricey-on-sale frock next summer (and the little fashionista will probably pout and say that" it's so last year" anyway).

Try to ignore the freakish woman trapped in the vase, inexplicably with butterflies and flowers-- the download takes forever in Firefox.  Actually the whole site could use some speed, but the last minute box in the lower-right is downright mesmerizing.

So if $50-on sale shoes for your kid isn't your thing, go check out Payless

Take a Long Walk off a Short Pier

Need a pillow the kids can destroy or...er, mini river stonesPier 1 is having a 50% off everything on the web site sale.  So they are either going bankrupt (returns will be a bit dicey in that case) OR finally restocking their stores with new merch.  Dear GOD -- what were the buyers thinking when they overstocked the glazed vases?  Not sure they're even worth $3 on sale!

And don't forget the tacky tie-dyed little chair to hold your cellphone on sale for $1.Pieronechair

Seriously -- I'm off to short some PIR stock :)

Women's Mind-Set Defines Shopping Habits

According to a new online survey of over 3,000 women, ages 18-49, by AMP Agency, how a woman approaches shopping does not change as she grows older, shifts from life stage to life stage, moves from region to region, has children, or moves income brackets. A woman's approach to shopping is very much part of who she is: "it is part of her DNA."

The report states that there are distinct approaches to shopping, and identified and segmented women across four distinct mind-sets or "Shopping Genes" :

  • The Content Responsibles (Practical, Loyal, Efficient)
  • The Natural Hybrids (Confident, Balanced, Classic)
  • The Social Catalysts (Social, Smart, Trendy)
  • The Cultural Artists (Creative, Impulsive, Adventurous)

With a 418 Billion dollar annual sales opportunity, figuring out how women shop can help marketers determine how to connect with them in distinct and effective ways, opines the report.

The groups were based on the respondents' self-reported views of themselves and their place in the world according to respondents' answers to a series of "influencer" type questions. This is how an estimated 67,560,586 women in the United States between the ages 18-49 slice up in population and overall discretionary and nondiscretionary spending.

  • Social Catalysts: 24 Million / Spending $153 Billion
  • Natural Hybrids: 23 Million / Spending $133 Billion
  • Content Responsibles: 13.5 Million / Spending $70 Billion
  • Cultural Artists: 7.5 Million / Spending $62 Billion
  • Total: 67,560,586 Million / Spending $ 417,747,533,559 Billion

And, on an individual annual spending basis, says the report:

  • Cultural Artist will spend an average of $7,672 annually
  • Natural Hybrid $5,383 Annually
  • Social Catalyst $6,035 Annually
  • Content Responsible $4,778 Annually

While the trendsetting Cultural Artists rank at the bottom for overall spend, they are spending more on an individual basis. And when it comes to key influencer categories including Fashion, Beauty, Health and Wellness, and Food categories, the Cultural Artists spending reigns.

This 11% of consumers falls at the highest end of the influence spectrum as the super influencers. Almost half stated they frequently go shopping just to see what's new in the stores. They are always shopping and almost all of them (97%) are willing to try new and different things and generally, want to be the first to try new things on the market , with a significant 85% reporting so. Surprisingly, they do rely strongly on information from friends, particularly across fashion, technology and health and beauty.

The Natural Hybrid (34%), is a cross between a social and trend-following butterfly and a grounded domestic diva. They look for classic products, things that aren't too trendy and are long lasting. Though 80% like to try new products, only half say they are likely to be the first of their friends to try new things, while the other half would rather their friends try first and report.

The Social Catalyst (35%) group falls near the top of the influencer spectrum and can be one of the strongest brand advocates. They are the planners, organizers, take pride in their friendship status and tend consider themselves the experts amongst their group. Almost 80% of this group think a night on the town is money well spent, but they are likely to seek out bargains to keep up with the latest trends. Only a third, however, is willing to spend money on products that may appear to be a fad.

The Content Responsible (20%) group is neither a trendsetter nor trend spreader, and not much of a spender, but they can be lifelong and increasingly loyal customers. 80% agreed that social status was not an important part of their life. These Practical, Responsible, Loyal consumers crave a hassle free shopping experience. Shopping to them is not seen as fun past time, but rather an errand or chore.

Hmmm...Cultural Artist or Social Catalyst????  Which one are you?

Surfin' the Sales in August

Nordstroms has just restocked the sale pages.  Check out what's on offer for 70% off or more.  There are also some great shoe deals too.  Men are on sale -- but they look like rejects from the JC Penney catalog.  I'll stick with my husband.  Meister_dress_2

Love this David Meiser Ruched V-neck dress that I'd buy in a heartbeat if I was a size 8 (or smaller).  Less than 70-bucks (reg. $228) and it's a flattering style that will always look great.

Apple_dressA great find for my 20-something friends: Hype Belted Tunic which is on sale for $57 (reg. $196 and worth every penny).   All you need are the black leggings and pirate boots.  Ahoy me harties!

Crap, now all I keep thinking about is Johnny Depp.  And Orlando Bloom.

And... Captain Feathersword.

And to the (Banana) Republic For Whose Shoes I Stand In...

Taking a quick break to check out the Banana Republic sale on summer merch.  Best deals are on suiting (takes you through Fall, although I never really *got* the short-suit look.  I mean, if Iwanted to look like a dork, I could just buy clothes from Kmart!  Cute dresses too, although they seem to be flying off the cybershelves.   Check out the shoes because for less than $40, espadrilles NEVER go out of style!!!

I know...shoes again?  Yes.  Why?  Because they always FIT ME, unlike pants that pick and choose which times of the month to fit properly or skirts that never seem to work without stockings (and WHO wants to wear pantyhose in August???).  Don't even get me started on dresses.  My dry cleaner just charged me $11 for a dress, and there were 3 of them in the bag.  Does he realize for 3 cleanings I could just BUY a new dress (albeit on sale, but still!).

So shoes remain my favorite items in the closet.   Handbags are good too...but with the recent craze for oversized bags that make my ass look HUGE, I've gone back to my first love: shoes (especially 4" heels that skinny my legs and make me look as though I've worked out...he, he...).

Urban Fashionista

Wouldn't be a Saturday without a quick check of my RSS feeds for SHOES!  Outstanding sale on flats and heels at Urban Outfitters.  More than 50% off in many cases -- adorable, trendy shoes like these quilted flats for less than $10!  And then there are these pixie boots in black, grey and beige....so Molly Ringwald in the Breakfast Club!

Accessories are also on sale and they still have pretty good stock leftover.
