Who the Hell is Craig?

Apologies to my regular readers for my hiatus.  Got distracted by some IRL work/home realities (apparently food doesn't magically *appear* in the fridge and did you know that kids aren't allowed to drive themselves to soccer? ...And while I'm on the subject of soccer, oh dear GOD -- why are there so many rehearsals practices and games?  How is it that EVERY American child plays this game at some point in their life and yet we still don't join the rest of the world as passionate supporters of football as it is played with your feet?)

So yes, lots of deals, especially clearance going on right now with the last of summer.  All my favorite haunts are blowing out the last of summer and some early Fall items.  But honestly, the best deal of the month (actually of the year) goes to Craigslist.  If you have heard of Craigslist, but never gone on...do yourself a favor and check it out in your local area (click on your state and then on your nearest city.

It's like the classifieds, on steroids -- all the stuff is local and often ridiculously inexpensive, especially larger items like furniture, lawnmowers, baby gear and building supplies.  I bought my daughter a badly needed set of shelves that turned out to be Workbench in solid cherry for...$50.  The folks we bought them from were as nice as you'd ever want to meet -- they bought the set a few years ago for $2-large.  Wow.

I moved from fan to brand advocate of Craigslist the day their CEO publicly turned down paid advertising support on the site with the comment, "I don't think our Craigslist community want advertising.  If that changes, I'll let you know".  Maybe Craig will run for President?

Women's Mind-Set Defines Shopping Habits

According to a new online survey of over 3,000 women, ages 18-49, by AMP Agency, how a woman approaches shopping does not change as she grows older, shifts from life stage to life stage, moves from region to region, has children, or moves income brackets. A woman's approach to shopping is very much part of who she is: "it is part of her DNA."

The report states that there are distinct approaches to shopping, and identified and segmented women across four distinct mind-sets or "Shopping Genes" :

  • The Content Responsibles (Practical, Loyal, Efficient)
  • The Natural Hybrids (Confident, Balanced, Classic)
  • The Social Catalysts (Social, Smart, Trendy)
  • The Cultural Artists (Creative, Impulsive, Adventurous)

With a 418 Billion dollar annual sales opportunity, figuring out how women shop can help marketers determine how to connect with them in distinct and effective ways, opines the report.

The groups were based on the respondents' self-reported views of themselves and their place in the world according to respondents' answers to a series of "influencer" type questions. This is how an estimated 67,560,586 women in the United States between the ages 18-49 slice up in population and overall discretionary and nondiscretionary spending.

  • Social Catalysts: 24 Million / Spending $153 Billion
  • Natural Hybrids: 23 Million / Spending $133 Billion
  • Content Responsibles: 13.5 Million / Spending $70 Billion
  • Cultural Artists: 7.5 Million / Spending $62 Billion
  • Total: 67,560,586 Million / Spending $ 417,747,533,559 Billion

And, on an individual annual spending basis, says the report:

  • Cultural Artist will spend an average of $7,672 annually
  • Natural Hybrid $5,383 Annually
  • Social Catalyst $6,035 Annually
  • Content Responsible $4,778 Annually

While the trendsetting Cultural Artists rank at the bottom for overall spend, they are spending more on an individual basis. And when it comes to key influencer categories including Fashion, Beauty, Health and Wellness, and Food categories, the Cultural Artists spending reigns.

This 11% of consumers falls at the highest end of the influence spectrum as the super influencers. Almost half stated they frequently go shopping just to see what's new in the stores. They are always shopping and almost all of them (97%) are willing to try new and different things and generally, want to be the first to try new things on the market , with a significant 85% reporting so. Surprisingly, they do rely strongly on information from friends, particularly across fashion, technology and health and beauty.

The Natural Hybrid (34%), is a cross between a social and trend-following butterfly and a grounded domestic diva. They look for classic products, things that aren't too trendy and are long lasting. Though 80% like to try new products, only half say they are likely to be the first of their friends to try new things, while the other half would rather their friends try first and report.

The Social Catalyst (35%) group falls near the top of the influencer spectrum and can be one of the strongest brand advocates. They are the planners, organizers, take pride in their friendship status and tend consider themselves the experts amongst their group. Almost 80% of this group think a night on the town is money well spent, but they are likely to seek out bargains to keep up with the latest trends. Only a third, however, is willing to spend money on products that may appear to be a fad.

The Content Responsible (20%) group is neither a trendsetter nor trend spreader, and not much of a spender, but they can be lifelong and increasingly loyal customers. 80% agreed that social status was not an important part of their life. These Practical, Responsible, Loyal consumers crave a hassle free shopping experience. Shopping to them is not seen as fun past time, but rather an errand or chore.

Hmmm...Cultural Artist or Social Catalyst????  Which one are you?

Science of Retail Revealed

Interesting post from the Budget Fashionista on retail mark-up:

Mark-up of Items at Macy's

New York Magazine recently did an excellent report on the various ways businesses, from drug dealers to dollar stores to Goldman Sachs, make money. While the list is focused on New York based businesses, the magazine profiled three businesses/comapnies that are of interest to all shoppers- H&M, Macy's, and a discount store

The mark-ups on the items sold at the stores are amazing (SJP Bitten lovers- do you still think she's doing her line out of the goodness of her heart?), particularly on goods like accessories. You would think the cheapest items in the store would be the least profitable, which apparently isn't always true.

Mark-up of top selling items at H&M
- Jewelry 50-70%
-Skinny Pants: 25%
- Bohemian Tunics: 25%
- Printed Hoodies: 30%
- Berets: 60%

So, for every $10 necklace while it's important to note the difference between mark-up (the difference between the price a merchant sells an item, the price they purchased it from the manufacturer) and profit (the actual money they make offer the item), the stores are still making a high profit off certain items. For every $10 H&M sells, it marks up the item $5 to $7. Even if they sell the necklace for $4, they're still making money.

Even dollar stores make a significant profit on the items they sell, mostly to do their ability to sell things in bulk at rock bottom prices.

So what does this mean? Clothing is big business. Budget is big business. While you may feel like you got a deal, the stores are still making a lot of money. In some cases, a 50% sale isn't all that much of a deal. Also, it seem that Wal_mart isn't the only store to practice questionable labor practices (hiring teens, part time workers, etc) in order to keep costs low.

Memorial Madness

May madness around my home this month with 2 birthdays, crazy-busy work, end of school year/sign up for summer activities, blah, blah, blah.

So I've been getting deluged by offers for this weekend.  Around our neck of the woods, the forecast is rain and lots of it, so I'll be rooting around for good buys:

One of the biggest sales of the season at Macy's, they've taken 10-50% off + on everything this weekend. They'll give you an extra 10% if you use your Macy's Card. And don't forget the clearance section, where an additional 25% off is taken from the already reduced prices.

Save 20% off an ENTIRE ORDER at Linens 'n Things. Use coupon code 194712697488.  This is a much better deal than their usual coupons that only take a discount off one item. Expires on 12/31/2007 - so bookmark this page.

West Elm's Memorial Day Sale knocks up to 25% off select purchases this weekend only. West Elm is the poor mom's Pottery Barn and owned by the same company.

Bath & Body Works' Memorial Day Sale features select items up to 50% off. Also in this sale you'll find Aromatherapy Body Lotion and Body Wash buy 1, get 1 free. Sale ends 05/28/2007.

Save 40% on total purchases from Coldwater Creek with coupon code WLP1582 at checkout. It works at Coldwater Creek Outlet too. Coupon expires 06/10/2007.

Finally, I have to add a feature on SHOES!  The Summer Sandal Sale at Payless, has some cheap kicks, starting at $5.99, and $7.49 for the guys. Shipping is free on orders of $50 or more.

Preppy Sale v. 2.0

Kate Spade is having a sale...up to 60% off!  Love her classic (if a tad pricey) styles. Aren't these the MOST adorable fur booties?  You must know someone who just had a baby :)

I'll be poking around the shoes for awhile, trying in vain to find my size.

And, I'm so loving this satchel bag for only $109 (reg. $398). Hint, hint <wink>
